1963 – first student residences open
Stiftelsen Chalmers Studenthem was founded at the instigation of Chalmers Students’ Association in partnership with Gothenburg City Council on 19 June 1961. There was already a high demand for good student accommodation, so the foundation invested in a major project to construct 650 purpose-built student residences in a short time.

The new residential complex at Emilsborg on Gibraltargatan was completed in autumn 1963. For many years thereafter, the foundation continued to manage and maintain this complex.

1990s – expansion begins
- In 1995–96 the property at Gibraltargatan 80 in Emilsborg was built – a 10-storey building containing 142 apartments. The building also houses the ”Nära Hem” pub and a swimming pool.

- In 1998 we acquired the Sångsvanen block, a charming 100-year-old building opposite the main entrance to Chalmers University of Technology. Converted to provide 140 student apartments, it opened in summer 2001.

- In 2002 we block-rented a smaller property at Skateberget, Lindholmen containing 16 apartments.

- From 1997 onwards we began renovating our rooms with kitchen alcoves, equipping them with new mini-kitchens and ventilation systems.

- In early 2004 we opened the Rännan containing 63 apartments – the first student residences ever built on the Chalmers campus.

- In spring 2004 we completed a renovation and extension project at Emilsborg, adding 48 new apartments.

- In autumn 2004 we opened the Blåelden complex at Guldheden. The ground floor contains shared housing for disabled residents and the upper floors contain 84 student apartments.

- Gibraltargatan 78 invigdes 2006 och består av 203 lägenheter.

- Chabo är det första permanenta studenthemmet på Campus Johanneberg. Chabo invigdes 2006 och består av 479 lägenheter.

Future
More and more people are coming to the knowledge city of Gothenburg to study. With our student population from all parts of Sweden and the world, we welcome this trend. We are seeing a growing demand for high-quality, functional student accommodation in Gothenburg, which means that we have to constantly expand our portfolio. We therefore have an ambitious programme to develop at least 400 new apartments for students and researchers over the next five years. Plans are well advanced for a number of specific development projects. For more information, see the “Projects” section.
